William Horton Obituary

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle passed away on January 7, 2021.  Bill was born on March 14, 1936 in Ashtabula, Ohio to the late William and Isabelle Horton.  He met the love of his life Lucille DelPrince and they married in 1960 at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Ashtabula, OH.

Bill worked for New York Central Railroad for many years. He spent the last 31 years of his career as a Supervisor at Sherwin-Williams Chemical plant/SCM Corp, now known as Ineos Pigments.  While at SCM Corp he worked in the Purchasing Dept. and Inventory Control until his retirement in 1998.

Growing up, Bill went to St. Joseph Catholic School. He served as an altar server at church and was involved in many sports activities.  He was a graduate of Ashtabula High School.  He played basketball and football until many knee injuries took the toll.

He was a longtime servant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church—he was a church usher and member of many church committees.  Bill is a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree and Third Degree, the Ashtabula Elks BPOE #208, a member of the North Kingsville Zoning Board of Appeals and a hospital volunteer at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

His many interest included attending his grandchildren’s games of soccer, basketball and band.  After his retirement in 1998, he played golf daily with friends at Village Green Golf Course where he made a hole in one, and Cross Creek Golf & Country Club, Ft. Myers, Fl.  Bill and his wife enjoyed ballroom dancing and playing golf.  He also enjoyed  going to the YMCA .  He was a huge fan of the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns.  He and his wife enjoyed the winter months in sunny Florida, playing golf and bocce with friends while enjoying the Florida life.

In 1999, he traveled to China with his wife and daughter Laurie to bring home their beautiful granddaughter, Ciarra.  It was a wonderful experience to bring home a beautiful baby girl that he adored and loved.

He was comfortable with people from all walks of life, very generous and genuine, kind and respectful which contributed to his personal success.  His sense of humor was a gift and an asset.  People loved to be around him, especially his family and friends.  He will be remembered for his keen mind, his quick wit and a manner that allowed the people that he met to feel like they knew him as a forever friend.

His generosity of spirit and his huge heart will be missed by all.  Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucille, and his children Laurie (Michael) Sovel of N. Kingsville and Melissa (Charles) Toman  of Youngsville, NC.  Loving grandfather of Ciarra M (Cory) Rought of San Diego, CA and William C. Toman  of Youngsville, NC. Step grandchildren; Danielle Toman of Fredericksburg, Virgina, Virgina Sovel of High Pt, North Carolina, Adam Sovel and Lilly Sovel of Ashtabula. He was an uncle and great uncle of many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Beatrice Brosky and Beverly Brinkman.
