Richard W. Nelson

Richard W. Nelson, (91), of Ashtabula, Ohio, passed away, Saturday, January 2, 2021.

Richard was born on March 9, 1929 in Ashtabula, Ohio to William and Blanche Nelson.  He graduated from Ashtabula High School, class of 1947.  Richard married Marilyn Westover on March 31, 1951.

Richard was a senior team member of the basketball squad that helped lead them to the 1946-47 Lake Shore League Championship.  After high school, he worked 38 years for Reliance Electric Company and served as Secretary of the Union for ten years.  After retiring, he started Nelson’s Golf Repair along with working part time at Chapel Hill Golf Course for 15 years.  In his spare time, he enjoyed playing a game of golf or two! 

Richard was in the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio, Rising Sun Lodge # 22, serving 50 years.

Dad always entertained his children and family with his Donald Duck impression.  He will always be remembered in our hearts with a smile when we hear Donald Duck.  He also loved listening to Big Band Swing music and dancing to the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy song!

Survivors include; his daughter, Linda (David) Laird, sons, Gary W. Nelson and Bruce D. (Anna) Nelson, grandchildren, Gary R. (Sandi) Nelson and Tiffanie (Darko) Nelson, Deon Heasley, Jason Heasley, Tara Heasley and a great-granddaughter, Alana Marie Kelemen and a niece, Carol (Lee) Sage and nephew, David (Cathy) Dewey.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, his parents, and a sister, Charlotte Dewey.

The family would like to thank all the Angels at the Country Club Retirement Campus for all their kindness and love they gave my dad.  And had to put up with!  And a thanks to Harbor Light Hospice.

Due to the current COVID crisis, no memorial or services will be held at this time.

Arrangements are being handled at Fleming & Billman Funeral Home, 526 W. Prospect Rd. of Ashtabula.  A private burial will take place at Ridgeview Cemetery in Ashtabula.
