Richard Huhta Obituary

Richard E. Huhta, 76 of Ashtabula, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday (July 22, 2020 at Ashtabula Medical Center due to cancer which was the result of having been exposed to Agent Orange while serving in Viet Nam. He was born in Ashtabula on March 18, 1944 the son of Otto and Helmi Huhta.

Richard graduated from Harbor High School in 1962, where he excelled in both basketball and track. He attended Kent State University Ashtabula campus until he was drafted by the US Army. He served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division and was a decorated veteran having been awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

Following his discharge from the service, he lived for many years in Punta Gorda, Florida and E. Ellijay, Georgia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William O. Huhta (who died in WWII), a sister, Thelma Jane Howe and brothers Raymond Charles Huhta and James Kenneth Huhta.

He is survived by his brother Robert G. Huhta and his wife Christine of Erie, Pa and many nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be conducted at the Edgewood Cemetery on Wednesday, (July 29th) at 11:00 am with Alisa Nierzejewski, Certified Celebrandt officiating with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 103. The Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula is in charge of the funeral and internment arrangements.

Covid-19 guidelines will be followed requiring the wearing of masks and observing social distancing.
