Christine Ann Bortnik
Christine Ann Bortnik, 72, of Thompson, Ohio passed away unexpectedly Sept. 15, 2021 at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center’s ER.
She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 10, 1949, the daughter of Carl and Betty (Olewski) Typek.
She graduated from high school in Pittsburgh in 1966 and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in three years from The University of Pittsburgh and graduated in the spring of 1969. The main reason she rushed through college in 3 years was so she could marry the one and only love of her life; her boyfriend since Jr. High School, John F. Bortnik. They officially became Mr. and Mrs. John and Christine Bortnik on October 18, 1969.
She and John moved to Ashtabula, Ohio when John took a job at Union Carbide. Christine was able to stay at home and raise their 4 children. The role of “mom” was why God put her on this earth. Her world was centered around the love she had for her children and grandchildren. She was the most kindhearted, generous, and caring person. She devoted her life to her family; always putting their needs ahead of her own. For Christine it was always the simple things in life that meant the most and setting a good example for her kids was very important to her.
Christine enjoyed going to garage sales, estate sales, and auctions; she enjoyed gardening, wildlife, Lake Erie, and the great outdoors. She was also very proud of her Polish heritage and being a Pittsburgh native. She had two very enjoyable jobs while living in Pittsburgh; one was running a tearoom at Soergel’s Orchards, and another was running estate sales. She was also a past member of St. Joseph Catholic Church (Our Lady of Peace Parish) and was an active mom at her children’s school events.
She is survived by her loving family; her children: Chris (Denise) Bortnik of Pittsburgh, PA, Johnette (Alan) Lopuszynski also of Pittsburgh, PA, Casey (Harry) Deligianis of Thompson, Ohio and Joshua Bortnik of Cambridge Springs, PA.; her grandchildren: Jane, Carl, and Ben Bortnik; Jack, Drew, and Sam Lopuszynski; and Zoey and John Deligianis; her siblings: Sandy (Mike) Joseph, Robert Typek and Grace Typek and her sister-in-law Mary Ann Bussard.
Very sadly she was preceded in death by her husband John in 1992 at the age of 44; she was also preceded in death by her parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday September 18, 2021, at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 1220 E. 21st Street, Ashtabula, Ohio with Fr. Thomas Bishop presiding. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband John.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you sit down and hand write a letter to a family member or friend, taking the time to tell them that they are important to you and why. This was something that Christine had just started to do, and the family would be honored if you tried doing it once or twice a month in her memory.
The Fleming-Billman Funeral Home is honored to be caring for Mrs. Bortnik and her family.
