Betty Jean Emmel

Betty Jean (Whiting) Emmel, born 8 August 1925 in Saybrook Township, Ashtabula, Ohio to Walter Glen and Mary Jane (Crofoot) Whiting. She passed away peacefully on June 29, 2022 at Riverside Hospital, Columbus, Ohio at the age of 96. She was a lifetime resident of Ashtabula until 2009, moving to Columbus to be close to her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Herbert Emmel, whom she married October 21, 1944 in Newport, Arkansas while he was serving in the Marine Corps during WWII. Also, her son, John Herbert Emmel Jr in 2000, her sisters: Carol Mary (Whiting) Crudele and Patricia Jane (Whiting) Bedell and a great grandson, Tyler Andrew Turano

She is survived by her two daughters: Karen Joy (David) Turano and Sandra Sue Moore both of Columbus. Her grandchildren: Brian (Kathy) Moore, Aaron (Lillian), Thad (Karen) Turano, Bethany (Rich) Moore, Bethen (Matthew) Johnson, and Kyle Turano . Great grandchildren Colin, Carter, Caden Moore, Blake, Brayden, Gianna Turano, Ryker, Eleanor, Boden, Tinley Turano,  Nicholas and Natalie Morrow, Adelynn Bowen, Quinley and Keegan Johnson. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was a lifetime member of the Ashtabula United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, the Ashtabula Genealogical and Ohio Genealogical Societies. She was an avid golfer, loved to garden and research the history of her family; and she worked for over 20 years for the Ashtabula County Board of Elections as a poll worker. She cherished her family above all.  

Visitation will take place on Tuesday July 5, 2022, from 12pm-1:30pm with a funeral service to immediately follow at 1:30pm at Fleming & Billman Funeral Home, 526 West Prospect Rd Ashtabula, Ohio.
