Clifford J. Spangler, age 85, Jefferson, died Tuesday morning in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.
He was born April 2, 1934 in Sheffield Twp., the son of Raymond & Mae (Weaver) Spangler and has been an area resident all of his life. Cliff was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in the DMZ immediately following the Korean Conflict. Cliff and Joyce Ann Phelps were married on April 12, 1961 at the Jefferson Methodist Church Parsonage.
Cliff was involved in building Hickory Grove Golf Course. He was a member of Laborer’s Union Local #245, working for many years with both Koski Construction and Burns Construction. Following his retirement at age 62 he has done lawn/golf course maintenance the past 23 years at Hickory Grove Golf Course. He was a member of the Jefferson Conservation Club, he played softball in his younger years, coached Little League for several years, loved bowling, golf, gardening, the lottery and going to the casino.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; two sons, Mark A. Spangler of Lenox Twp. & Timothy J. Spangler of Rome Twp.; two grandsons, Jesse J. Spangler & Hunter D. Spangler; two great-grandsons, Remington & Brently Spangler; a sister, Norma Freede in West Virginia and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard & Bruce Spangler and a sister, Shirley Harju.
A memorial service will be held Monday (11/4) at 11:00 AM at the Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson with Rev. Dr. Mick Gilliam, associate at the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Neal Post #743 of the American Legion will render military honors. Burial will take place at a later date in Lenox Center Cemetery.
